With the growing senior recruitment industry in Vietnam and the region, more and more people want to join this field. Instead of doing a desk job after graduation, many people are now more interested in using their relationships (‘relationship’ or ‘network’) to earn income. Why not? Headhunter is considered a special job if you are good at social communication and expanding relationships. Instead of waiting for someone to contact you, you are the one who uses the information and resources you have to contact senior candidates or potential customers.
But being a headhunter is not as easy as we think. It requires skills and a lot of patience. You have probably seen a lot of successful headhunters but there are many others out there waiting to succeed in this job. These are people who have been rejected by countless candidates or their clients. And they are still looking for the best way to do a good job of a real headhunter. So, if you don’t want to struggle like the people above, it’s best to know the characteristics and skills needed to be a real headhunter. 1. Marketing with creative strategies Since headhunters only receive consulting fees from companies, the biggest challenge for a headhunter is to be able to make an unattractive position (for example, maybe the salary, the client’s brand, the working location is too far, the boss is too difficult, the requirements are very high but the benefits are low, the client has a high turnover rate, the culture is complicated, etc.) at least known and accepted by potential candidates in the related field. A good headhunter is someone who can share and emphasize the unique selling points from the client, or the position they are looking for, as well as challenge candidates with the points they will have to overcome if they do that position. There are many reasons why a client needs executive recruitment services. The first point is that headhunters can help shorten the recruitment process (on average from 10-20 days, sometimes only 1-2 days according to the client’s request), and the other is to be able to find suitable passive candidates for a job that normally these candidates would not be active.
apply. It is the headhunter’s job to advise and provide information to candidates so that they see that it is a challenging and interesting job. This can only be achieved if you know how to market the job to different candidates. skills you should have to become a successful headhunter
2. Sell yourself and your services
What a headhunter does is not only recruit a candidate for a position, but you have to sell that position to the candidate. To be successful, this requires Trust, Confidence and Honesty on your part. From the first impressions with the candidate to the time after you close the deal, you have to make sure that you are selling yourself well. From the way you dress, walk, talk, be confident in the exchanges between the candidate & the client and take responsibility for the client and each candidate.
There is nothing better than having a good reputation in this field. And it takes a lot of time and challenges to be able to have a good headhunter image in Vietnam.

3. Connect and communicate
No matter how good you are at other skills, you won’t be successful in this profession if you don’t have a genuine interest in people, whether they are candidates or clients. Communication skills are largely innate, but many people can develop them if you work on them daily. You must know how to deal with each client and candidate. You will need to stay connected with candidates even after you have successfully referred them, or stay in touch with clients even after you have filled all their positions. You will need to treat everyone well even if they are complete strangers to you because you never know when you will work with them. Communication skills are the foundation of a professional headhunter, from email, phone calls, face-to-face meetings, networking events or business lunches.
4. Persuade, influence others and make your own mark
You must know how to convince potential candidates that this is the job that can maximize their potential. You must also know how to convince your clients that everyone on the list you sent them is the best candidate for the company’s requirements. Your ability to persuade and influence their decisions will help you close many big deals. Personally, I think this is one of the most important skills in this profession because (on your own) you will need to negotiate with directors or CXO level.
5. Identify and seek out candidates’ unique talents and skills
Some candidates are not sure what their real strengths are. They will submit a CV without any direction. That is when you need to jump in and reposition the candidate. Based on your interviews, you will be able to identify their greatest skills or most outstanding values that are not fully reflected on the CV. Your ability to evaluate and differentiate the best candidates from the average candidates will make you one of the best headhunters in Vietnam.
